The Indian wild ass is well adapted to life in the arid and semi-arid regions of its range. It has a stocky body with short legs and a short, erect mane. The coat is typically sandy brown in color, and the animal has a white underbelly. The wild ass is a grazer and feeds primarily on grasses and other vegetation.

The Indian wild ass is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to habitat loss and hunting for meat and sport. Conservation efforts have been implemented to protect the remaining populations, and the species has been successfully reintroduced to some areas.

In India, the Indian wild ass is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, and hunting or capturing the animal is prohibited. The Indian wild ass is also listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which means that trade in the species is heavily restricted.
