Dr Matt Ives presents new research from INET which predicts that if current deployment trends in key renewable and storage technologies continue for the next decade, we will save trillions of dollars and be on track to meet the Paris goals.
However, to ensure a smooth and durable transition we need to stop fossil fuels from causing global warming before the world stops using fossil fuels. The Carbon Takeback Obligation proposed by Oxford Net Zero scientists, is a policy intervention that proposes we make safe carbon dioxide disposal a licensing requirement for the continued extraction and import of fossil fuels. Prof Myles Allen discusses this mitigation policy that requires the fossil fuel industry to be responsible for storing the CO2 generated by their products.
China has a key role to play in the road to carbon neutrality as a major fossil fuel emitter and a country that has much to gain from the global growth in demand for clean technologies. Prof. Li Zheng will discuss the transition of China’s energy supply towards carbon neutrality and reflect on the potential for policy innovations to improve the speed and durability of this transition.
