On May 27, 1944, Anderson was part of the B-17 bomber escort when he spotted four Messerschmitt Bf 109 planes. In an utterly reckless move, Bud launched himself against the Germans, leading to one of the most epic dogfights ever, in the one that met his greatest rival: a Luftwaffe pilot who equaled him in ability, and who forced the American to give his best to win.
