World Health Organization (WHO) officials provided an update on the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO, on Monday said that earlier in the day, €7.4 billion was pledged by 40 countries in an effort to raise funds for the development of a COVID-19 vaccine, diagnostics and therapeutics through the WHO's Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator.
When asked about the reopening of places such as movie theatres amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme, said that the organization advises that anywhere people gather where social distancing or proper hygiene cannot be maintained, a risk remains to "amplify" the spread of the coronavirus.
Tedros expressed concern Friday about the impact of the novel coronavirus on underdeveloped countries, as the global case count from COVID-19 continues to climb.
