During a recent NewsX debate, Sandeep Chachra, Executive Director of ActionAid Association, underscored the importance of viewing political developments in Bangladesh from multiple perspectives. He particularly stressed the need to understand the concerns of students and youth, who represent about 28% of the population and are deeply affected by high unemployment.
Sandeep also said that while the initial decades of Sheikh Haseena’s rule saw significant economic and social progress, the growing intolerance of dissent amidst growing economic difficulties was cause for concern.
Sandeep noted that despite incidents of violence against minorities, it was heartening to see groups of students actively protecting these communities.
Sandeep highlighted that forming an interim government is a positive development and crucial for preventing the consolidation of divisive and reactionary forces in Bangladesh during the current political vacuum.
