#FortPannerden #Nederland #Waterlinie
Fort Pannerden was built from 1869 to 1872 as a barrage to prevent an attacking army from advancing via the river Waal towards the New Dutch Waterline. In addition, the fort had to prevent the Pannerdensch Canal from being dammed up, which could result in the New Dutch Waterline running out of water.
A few years after construction, the design of the building had already become obsolete due to advancing weapon technology. Therefore, between 1885 and 1890, two steel armored batteries were built on the fort, on either side of the river battery. The existing river battery itself was also modernized with concrete and armored steel. The fort is therefore also referred to as an armored fort. Finally, embrasures for mortars were made during this work. All these modifications were aimed at improving the coverage of the area and also better protecting the fortress against modern artillery shells.
Fort Pannerden can be seen as the successor of Fort Sterreschans, which served between 1742 and 1795 and was located a few hundred meters further downstream, and the Schenkenschanz fortress, which was located a few kilometers upstream between 1586 and 1707 at the old junction between Rhine and Waal before the Pannerdensch Canal was constructed.
