Protests erupted across Catalonian towns on Monday after nine Catalan separatist leaders were handed lengthy prison sentences ranging between nine and 13 years over the 2017 independence referendum.
The leaders were cleared of violent rebellion in the failed bid to lead Catalonia to break away from Spain but they were found guilty of sedition and misuse of public funds. Seven Spanish Supreme Court judges delivered the verdicts on Monday after the conclusion of a four-month court trial.
Protesters occupied El Prat airport forcing flights to be cancelled and they also blocked key roads across the region.
