Here we have ‘Roadside Picnic’ by the Soviet brothers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, first published in 1972 and here published in a standard edition by the Folio Society in 2023. This edition is illustrated by Dave McKean, with a foreword by Ursula K. Le Guin and it’s translated by Olena Bormashenko from Ukraine.
Roadside Picnic is a philosophical science fiction novel set in the aftermath of an extraterrestrial event that occurred in six sites around the world. These landing sites, called Zones, holds remnants of the alien visitation in forms of extremely dangerous artefacts. Despite the extreme danger inside these Zones, people called Stalkers enter inside them to retrieve these alien artefacts and illegally sell them on.
The book is bound in blocked and printed textured paper that looks and feels like a bit like buckram. The page edges are digitally printed and the endpapers are printed as well. The book comes in a sturdy printed slip-case.
The book is printed on Abbey Pure Rough paper which is thick and of good quality. The text is printed in dark green. There are 7 double-page spread colour illustrations and a double sided fold-out.
