In 2020, the City’s Department of Planning, Building, and Development completed an update to the Comprehensive Plan, “City Plan 2040,” which was adopted by Roanoke City Council. Planning staff is now formulating a Zoning Ordinance Text Amendment update, to align the City’s Zoning Ordinance with the priorities and goals set out during the Comprehensive Plan process.
As part of this update, the Department invites your feedback on three important amendments that relate to specific action items referenced in “City Plan 2040”:
1. Permitting “accessory apartments” in all residential zoning districts in the City, addressing the need for affordable housing and opportunities for people to age in place.
2. Creating accessory uses for both “electric vehicle charging stations” and “solar energy systems,” to embrace new energy efficient technologies.
3. Eliminating the minimum parking requirements in all zoning districts throughout the City, to avoid requiring parking that is unnecessary and creates large, seldom used parking lots.
These amendments will be presented to the Planning Commission on October 11 and to City Council on October 18.
