The Belgrade Security Conference 2024 was dedicated to Budimir Lončar, last Minister of Foreign Affairs of Yugoslavia serving from 1987 until 1991, and a long serving career diplomat who passed away this year.
Before the panel on Non-Alignment, Tvrtko Jakovina, tenured professor at the University of Zagreb, delivered a compelling commemorative lecture about Budimir Lončar. Known as "Mr. Non-Aligned," Lončar played a pivotal role in shaping Yugoslavia’s foreign policy and advancing the Non-Aligned Movement during critical moments in history.
The lecture highlighted Lončar’s remarkable diplomatic career, starting in the aftermath of the Tito-Stalin split in 1949 and spanning decades of transformative global events. From his work in the UN mission to serving as ambassador to the USA during George Bush’s presidency, Lončar’s legacy reflects his unwavering commitment to international cooperation and peace.
