Eric grafts a Rocky Mountain Juniper with Kishu foliage. "Grafting is not a pretty process, but it will make a pretty tree." He purchased the tree from a collector in Wyoming. It's currently about 12" tall, has a nice trunk with old deadwood.
00:00:51 Kishu is one of Eric's favorite foliage types.
00:01:03 First, he explores what the lifeline looks like, because he needs to find a good lifeline to place the graft. Eric wants to make the tree shohin size and explains his grafting and growth plan.
00:02:18 Ideal spots for Eric to put a graft.
00:03:21 Prepping Kishu scions. A scion is a young shoot or twig of a plant.
00:04:13 Eric touched up the edge of his grafting knife before beginning the work. He describes how the blade should feel.
00:05:15 Eric demonstrates how to cut the end of the scion.
00:06:28 Graft placements - how to cut to create access to the tree's cambium. Matching cambium from the scion to cambium of the tree.
00:08:22 Using plastic rope (he purchased at a convenience store in Japan!) to press cut portion of the Rocky Mountain Juniper to the scion. Regular green grafting tape is fine to use.
00:09:23 Eric demonstrates his tyeing process, slipping a bag with sphagnum moss down over each scion, creating a mini-greenhouse.
00:10:29 All four grafts are on; the last step is to cover the grafts that will be exposed to the sun.
