When Michelangelo was still a teenager, the particularly enlightened prior of Santo Spirito in Florence, Italy, gave him permission to perform anatomical dissections in the morgue of the convent. In gratitude, Michelangelo gave the prior a wooden crucifix as a gift, which was placed over the high altar of the church. Lost for centuries, the “Crucifix” was rediscovered in the 1960s and is today displayed in the sacristy of the church.
