St. John's Vancouver Morning Sermon
Ven. Dan Gifford - Acts 20:1-24
September 6, 2020
On Paul’s last night in Troas, he speaks with the believers late into the night. Eutychus, falls asleep and drops three-stories to his death. Paul takes Eutychus in his arms and Eutychus receives life again. This story mirrors that of Elijah (1 Kg. 17:21), Jesus (Matt. 9:23-24) and Peter (Acts 9:40). We know that God alone is the giver of life. The healing of Eutychus is a picture of the new life that comes through faith in Jesus and the gift of the Spirit. This new life in the Spirit radically changes the way that we live now. This is reflected in Paul’s farewell to the Ephesians Church: “You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews…But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” (20:18-19,24)
