One in six students at American four-year universities is the first in their family to pursue a college degree. These students encounter a unique tension as they navigate the disparate worlds of home and school. Dr. Buffy Stoll Turton's research explores the success stories of eight diverse first-generation seniors at Miami University – a selective, four-year, residential institution in Oxford, Ohio – looking in particular at how participants experienced and navigated tension between the worlds of home and school, and accomplished their goal of graduating from college.
In this webinar, Dr. Stoll Turton will share stories from her narrative study; describe the ways in which participants experienced and navigated tension between home and school; and outline implications for practice that can guide staff in residence life and departments across the university in supporting first-generation student success.
