Late afternoon of 18. Dec ember 2013, the 8th division of the South Sudanese Army rebelled and took control over Bor town. The mutiny was triggered by internal disputes within the ruling party SPLM two days before, which led to wide spread killings of members of the Nuer tribe in Juba. Other divisions of the SPLA followed the rebellion, mainly led by Nuer commanders. Almost instantaneously, the conflict, which begun as a power struggle between the president and his former deputy, became a war along tribal lines. In the evening of the 18. 12. 2013, Manfred and his colleague, both teaching at the Dr. John Garang Memorial University of Science and Technology in Bor fled from their home to the refugee camp of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Since then, Bor town changed hands four times, with widespread lootings, destruction and killings.
