Insulation Supports: Use Wire Insulation Supports to Hold Attic Insulation Up Between Beams
Keeping your house well insulated is a good but annoying necessity, especially if you live in any temperature extremes – and it's important to make sure your home insulation stays in place and working well.
A common problem with batten insulation – pre-cut wide strips of fiberglass insulation – is that it never stays put. It can shift, fold way from the wall, get squished, and, especially, fall from between your attic joists. When the batten insulation is just a bit too narrow, the friction between it and the wooden beams crossing your attic aren't enough, and it may be that you insulation keeps falling.
In this video, watch as a guy with the same problem (insulation falls) deals with it simply with wire struts. The value in these struts is that they're long, stiff strips of metal that don't easily bend, and so are perfect for ensuring that the batten insulation stays in place. He puts the write struts on top of the rafters, making them perpendicular so the batten insulation is held up by a sort of grid in your attic.
This method should work for any r value and for any type of strip insulation to stop insulation from falling down – the issue isn't that the insulation is heavy, it's that it can start to slide and fall down over the years.
So keep your batten insulation in place and your energy bills down with these wire struts and some diy building insulation maintenance!
