13th February 1999 at The Valley (20,043)
Charlton Athletic 1 (0)(K. Jones 70): Royce, Mills, Brown, Tiler, Powell, Robinson, K. Jones, Kinsella, Redfearn (Barnes 66), Hunt, Pringle (Bright 83). Subs. (not used) Ilic, Newton, Barness.
Liverpool 0 (0): James, Heggem, Matteo, Carragher, Staunton, Redknapp, Ince, Bjornebye (Song 74), McManaman, Fowler, Owen (Riedle 81). Subs. (not used) Thompson, Friedel, Gerrard.
Referee: Mike D. Reed (Birmingham).
Sent-off: Carragher ordered off in 68th minute after catching Pringle in the throat with his arm. Considered a harsh decision by both sets of players (including Pringle). Liverpool’s French manager Gerard Houllier was extremely angry and openly criticised the referee at the Press Conference. Liverpool subsequently appealed against the Carragher sending off but the F.A. upheld the referee’s decision. Houllier’s reaction to the F.A. decision was: “It is the greatest injustice of my life.” It was no surprise when it was reported on March 1st that Houllier will face charges of misconduct by the F.A.
Bookings: Mills (51), foul on Owen; Ince (52), foul on Kinsella; Staunton (53), foul on Robinson; Bjornebye (65), time wasting.
Betting scam: Two days before the above match, police arrested three Malaysians and a Charlton man, employed by the club, when they discovered that electric cables at The Valley had been tampered with. They believed they had thwarted an attempt by big-money betting syndicates in the Far East to cause an abandonment of the Liverpool match by blowing the floodlights.
