Tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated following Israeli airstrikes on Iran early Saturday. The strikes were in retaliation for a barrage of ballistic missiles fired by Iran on Israel earlier this month. Smoke was visible over the city skyline and explosions were heard in Tehran. The Israeli defence forces have framed these strikes as a defensive move to counter attacks by Iran and its allied proxies, Hamas, Houthis and Hezbollah. The White House has confirmed that President Biden is being regularly briefed on the situation.
