Hi everyone! This is a short video documenting the growth of my Ornate Bichir (Polypterus ornatipinnis) over 4 years. This species of polypterus is known to reach 24" in captivity and possibly bigger in the wild. As this fish is captive bred, it is certainly possibly that the maximum size will not be reached... We shall see as time goes by.
I try to measure my fish from time to time and based on my most recent "eyeball" last month my Ornate bichir is at least 16 inches TL as she was some distance from the ruler and was also not laid out completely straight.
I feed my bichirs 3-4 times a week with carnivore pellets, tilapia, earthworms, silversides, krill.
It is in a 210 gallon tank with a 55 gallon sump filter for a total volume of approximately 265 gallons. The temperature is kept at 78-79 degrees Fahrenheit.
