Our planet has physical boundaries. An everlasting increase in the usage of natural resources is therefore physically not possible. Can our current economic model based on continued economic growth respect this physical limit? Is eternal economic growth possible without a bigger ecological footprint? Proponents of degrowth answer this question with a clear “no”. Although they base their answer on strong evidence against the ecological possibility of eternal growth, “degrowth” is still not present in mainstream discussions about the future of our economy and society. This must change if we want to create a debate that lives up to the ecological crisis we are facing.
During this event, we will dive into the topic of degrowth through a discussion with two experts on the subject: Pr. Julia Steinberger and Pr. Irmi Seidl. We will touch on some crucial aspects of degrowth such as the future labor market, or how to create a transition process that is inclusive. We also want to give the discussion a practical side, and think concretely about measures that could be put in place today to facilitate the transition to a degrowth world.
This event is organised by the “System Change” working group of Climate Strike. In this group, we want to turn the often shouted demand “System Change not Climate Change” into a concrete transition plan with actionable demands. We investigate different theories of change and want to bring together different activist groups behind one single new system proposition. If you are interested in joining the project, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
