(21 Dec 2020) Refrigerated trucks from the shipping company H. Essers were seen arriving and departing from the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine factory in Puurs, Belgium, on Monday.
A security guard was standing nearby holding a sign that read 'Medicines Urgent' and one of the trucks had a Red Cross sign on its front window.
Although the contents of these trucks were unknown, on 1 December H. Essers transported Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccines to Brussels Airport.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said on Monday that an expert committee had recommended conditional approval for a coronavirus vaccine developed by BioNTech and Pfizer to be used across the European Union, weeks after the shot was first granted permission under emergency provisions in Britain and the United States.
The decision came after a closed-door discussion during which EMA scientists responsible for assessing the vaccine presented their analysis to other experts and scrutinized data from companies.
The approval needs to be rubber-stamped by the European Commission and the pharmaceutical companies will need to submit follow-up data on their vaccine for the next year.
Authorities in Germany and several other European countries have said they hope to begin vaccinating people on 27 December.
