The Messier Catalog contains 110 "deep sky objects" that are excellent targets for amateur astronomers, once you've looked at the Moon and planets. In the late 1700’s, Charles Messier and other observers compiled a catalog of these deep sky objects - star clusters, galaxies, nebulae. In this talk, Bill briefly describes these celestial wonders and gives a few pointers on how to find them. Normally, these 110 deep sky objects are scattered throughout the night sky, and only a handful are viewable at certain times of the year. However, each year, around the time of the vernal equinox, a 'Messier Marathon' can be attempted where you have the opportunity to view all 110 Messier objects in one night! Bill also discusses how to prepare for such an undertaking, which the Memphis Astronomical Society will attempt to do this year in 2 1/2 marathons, and 1 full Messier Marathon.
From the February 7, 2020 Meeting of the Memphis Astronomical Society.
