What’s the good & bad of living in SLC? This is one of the top questions I hear from my out of state clients considering a move to Utah. The pros clearly outweigh the cons as people are moving here by the thousands. As a matter of fact, Utah is the fastest growing state by percentage in the country. Utah has the #1 job market & the #1 economy, but it’s not perfect. Today, I’m going to answer the question, What is it like living in SLC?

Here's the pros and cons of living in Salt Lake City, Utah.
THE BAD or CONS:
#1 Utah is Growing Fast, but it’s too fast. People are moving here & there’s no homes
#2 Poor air quality. Salt Lake City has some of the worst air in the country
#3 Utah has horrible drivers. Statistically, Utah is consistently ranked among the worst in the nation in car accidents & rudeness of drivers
#4 Road construction. We can’t widen or build roads fast enough
#5 Utah is Dry. We are the 2nd driest state in the country & in the summer, it gets hot! Due to the high elevation, you will easily get sunburns.
#6 Utah has extreme weather. We can have weeks in sub-freezing temperatures in winter & over 100 degrees in the summer
#7 Utah has strict liquor laws
#8 Lack of night life
#9 Utah is VERY conservative. If you move here, you’re not going to be able to change it. Just accept it, Utahan’s are conservative & they will fight to keep it that way
#10 There’s a lot of Mormons AKA member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. For some reason, this freaks people out or concerns them. I guess people fear what they don’t understand. Truth be told, most people fit right in & enjoy their over-friendly neighbors
Other negatives about living here. Theft. Kids, they are everywhere. Depression. Lack of cultural diversity. Affordability. Home prices & rent is skyrocketing. AND, Guns. A lot of Utahan’s own a gun & a lot people here have a concealed weapons permit

The Good or PROS:
#1. Low taxes & the local government doesn’t overstep it’s bounds. On the contrary, they work hard to protect our rights. We have one of the most fiscally responsible governments. US News ranked UT #5 in the US
#2. The People that live here are friendly & hospitable. Despite the lack of cultural diversity, Utahan’s are very accepting of those with different beliefs & from other backgrounds
#3. It easy to get a job here & it’s easy to get a high paying job. With our lower taxess you get to keep more of your money. Utah has the lowest ave. unemployment rate, 3%
#4. The Great outdoors. We have 5 National Parks & 43 state parks. Utah is a land of adventure & fun with an endless supply of hiking, biking & jogging trails, along with photography, fishing, hunting, climbing, boating & etc. Utahans are also among the healthiest in the US
#5. Utah has the greatest snow on earth. More importantly, Salt Lake City is one of the most accessible ski destinations in the world with 14 ski resorts within a short drive of the city
#6. Sense of community. Post Malone is a huge advocate of Utah. He said, “You feel like you’re part of something bigger,”
#7. Utahan’s are generous with time & money. Utah is #1 for the percentage of residents who donate time & money. This is a large part of what makes living here so great
8. Salt Lake is a great place to live, but many of our cities are consistently ranked among the top places to live in the country. Last year, US News ranked Utah as the 4th best state
#9. All 4-seasons. There’s real beauty in the experiencing the four seasons. And, the 4-seasons bring a healthy balance to life & nature which enhances Utah’s beauty & makes a wonderful place
#10 Salt Lake is clean & beautiful
Utahan’s are huge sports fans. We’ve got a baseball team, soccer & even hockey, but the Utah Jazz is the #1 draw. If you’re concerned about living with Mormon’s, you have nothing to worry about.
