OK guys, this one is made for the DIY'ers...for everyone that's ever gotten stumped at the nursery when it comes to selecting the right plants the first time for your landscape. These are a few simple concepts that I use to do my planting designs and help guide folks in the right direction when it comes to which plants to buy. Often times, we find ourselves wandering around amidst the vast array of plants and trees searching aimlessly for the 'right' ones...well these techniques are solid for anyone who needs to redo a complete landscape or slightly modify a current garden.

In this video, I talk about 5 concepts that aid in selecting the right plants.

1. Style. Gearing your landscape to a specific style is the first step to creating a consistent look with a cohesive professional aesthetic.

2. Layers. Creating a layered effect to the landscape (especially a front yard) is the really the focus of this video. We look at how designing for a layered look in the landscape (foreground, middle ground, and background) helps majorly boost curb appeal by creating depth and interest in the garden.

3. Contrast. Keeping a landscape from appearing monotone is an important factor in selecting the right plant material. Having a high variation of color and texture makes the landscape exciting and eye-catching.

4. Sun Condition. Understanding and identifying your sun/shade condition in your yard is an absolute MUST when purchasing plants at the nursery. Reputable growers and nurseries will have facts about the each plant for sale for the buyer to look at so they can gain knowledge of the conditions each plant needs to thrive. Check the facts!!

5. Water needs. Each plant also has individual watering requirements for optimum health. Selecting plants that are within the same watering requirements is also a KEY component to a successful landscape.
