Wearing my new Shimano SH-XC31 clipless cycling shoes while bike commuting. These are mountain bike shoes with recessed cleats.

My first impression of Shimano SH-XC31 is that they work very well. I got them because I like the neutral color, although not thrilled by the glossy black patch work. They look like shoes from a sci-fi movie. Nevertheless, the shoes do look cool.
The Shimano SH-XC31 has reflective squares on the back of each shoe but otherwise has less reflective features than my Pearl Izumi shoes, which are one size larger to accommodate thick socks in the winter when I more regularly ride at night.
I'm a big fan of fake leather (vegan), and the 3 simple velcro straps for adjustability.
I prefer Shimano SPD clipless systems because they are reliable and don't allow a lot of sloppy foot movement in my experience. Arguably every clipless system has its drawbacks.
I use the Shimano SM-SH51 cleats, which are one directional release. They can still be unclipped from the pedal by turning the heel farther inward in case of a crash.
I have also worn Shimano SH-SD66 cycling sandals in the past. They are comfortable, but heavy compared to most cycling footwear.

Note: I rode my bike to Lindbergh Park today on my bike commute to work. It got a little messy.
