Julian Smith

The selecting of the singers who have taken part in Cardiff Singer was, for many years in the early days of the competition, in the hands (and ears!) of Julian Smith, who auditioned the hopeful applicants and acted as Music Adviser. His wisdom, support and friendliness were invaluable to those young singers who travelled from all over the globe to Cardiff.

When Julian died earlier this year, we lost a valued and much-loved colleague and friend.

This is a short video we made as part of the television coverage in 2005, which explains the process. It’s very different nowadays when most of the process takes place online - but in those years it was a very personal and busy job!
