Les Phillips is the Pain Psychologist in the Rehab Medicine team at EmergeOrtho. His approach is geared toward patient empowerment with knowledge and techniques designed to restore health and functional capacity and decrease pain and symptoms. Dr. Phillips has over 25 years of experience in chronic pain rehabilitation. He has been the program director, clinical director and staff psychologist in multiple interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation programs. He has been with EmergeOrtho since 2000.
Additionally, Dr. Phillips is an avid practitioner and instructor of mind/body medicine techniques. He is a certified consulting hypnotist by the National Guild of Hypnotists. He completed instructor training in mindfulness meditation at the Duke Center for Integrative Medicine. He is well-versed in numerous meditative and nervous system calming traditions. He also uses cognitive-behavioral and behavioral treatment methods, as well as energy psychology methods in his treatment.
Dr. Phillips also has considerable experience in education and training. He has instructed medical students, medical residents, psychology interns and nursing students in psychological treatment and behavioral medicine. He taught the psychology of learning at the undergraduate level and psychological assessment at the graduate level. He developed or co-developed behavioral programs in pain management, smoking cessation and weight loss.
Additionally, Dr. Phillips has been a frequent lecturer on the topics of pain, rehabilitation and stress management for numerous audiences, including rehabilitation specialists and insurance adjusters. He helped develop and implement a mentor training program for executive leaders in the VA hospital system and did substantial organizational training in the VA system. Dr. Phillips is available as a lecturer and consultant for rehabilitation professionals and insurance adjusters.
