A Travelogue on Day outing from Kolkata to Piyali Island and Kaikhali. Piyali Island is a perfect place to spend a day on river side in the mangrove forest and to get a flavour of Sundarban. Kaikhali, on the bank of River Matla, is a gateway to Sundarbans.
How to go:
A 2.5 hrs drive from Kolkata will take you to Piyali Island. It takes 40 minutes to reach Kaikhali from Piyali Island. Kaikhali can be reached direct from Kolkata on 3 hrs drive.
If you want to visit these places in public transport, then take the Lakshmikantapur bound local train from Sealdah south section. To reach Piyali Island, get down at Dakshin Barasat station and then take an Auto to reach a place called Kella, which is the entry point of Piyali Island. It takes around 1 to 1.5 hrs to reach Piyali from Dakshin Barasat station.
To reach Kaikhali, get down at Jaynagar-Majilpur station and take Auto to reach Kaikhali. On the way one can also visit Nimpith Ramakrishna Ashram near Jaynagar.
Where to Stay:
At present there is no night stay option at Piyali Island, as the tourist lodge is closed.
At Kaikhali - Good accommodation on the Matla river front is available at 'Paryatak Abas' of Ramakrishna Ashram at a very low cost. Booking can be made through Nimpith Ramakrishna Ashram office.

Fooding Option:
While visiting Piyali Island, it is best to carry your own food/ lunch, as no good option available for lunch.
At Kaikhali, even if you don't stay at Paryatak Abas, you will find few eateries serving fresh lunch, along with cooked fish from the river. You can have lunch at Radhakrishna Restaurant (Contact: 9382048436/ 9382804841).
