The Woman with the Torch

She was a qualified surgeon who advocated for women's political voting rights.
She offered her services to the Royal Army Medical Corps after the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 but was told to "go home and sit still."

Undaunted, Elsie founded her own organization, the Scottish Women's Hospitals, which provided medical care to troops in Serbia and Russia.
She was the first woman to be awarded the Order of the White Eagle, Serbia's highest honor.
Following the Russian Revolution in November 1917, Elsie and her medical team were evacuated.
The day after returning to England, she died of cancer.
