The tiger state of Madhya Pradesh is losing one tiger to natural or unnatural causes every week in the last eight months. From January to August 2023, a total of 32 tiger deaths have been reported from the state. This figure is only two less than the total 34 deaths that were reported last year. If the official figures are to be believed a total of 130 tigers have died in the entire country in the past 8 months. In the past 10 years between 2012 and 2022, a total of 270 tiger deaths have been reported from Madhya Pradesh, this is highest in the entire country, probably because MP is also the home to the maximum number of big cats in the country.
If the figures of deaths reported so far this year are also included the number of deaths would be more than 300. Of the 32 deaths that have been reported so far this year, 9 have been reported from Bandhavgarh tiger reserve. Bandhavgarh has the largest number of tigers in the state— as per the data of the latest tiger census of 2022, there were a total of 165 tigers in Bandhavgarh, followed by 129 at Kanha, 123 at Pench, 64 at Panna, 62 at Satpura, 20 at Sanjay Dubri national park, thus overall there were a total of 563 tigers in the entire state. In the previous census it was only 399.
