The 4th Movement (Baila) of a brand new Cello Concerto by Sri Lankan-American composer Lalanath de Silva, performed here by Juan Aguilera Cerezo (Cello) and Patricio Medina Carrillo (Piano), both from Andalusia, Spain. The work was a 21st birthday gift to the composer's daughter, Liyanga de Silva, herself a Cellist. Originally scored for Cello and Small Orchestra with percussion, this is a version for Cello and Piano prepared by the composer. The work has four movements. The first two - (1) Lento e trise (2) Spiritoso, are strung together. The first movement was scored during a difficult emotional time for the composer. The 3rd movement - Galappo gentile - based on a traditional Sri Lankan dance form - Thuranga Vannama - is a set of variations based on the traditional folk tune. The final movement - Danza spiritoso - is a dance (Baila) based on popular Sri Lankan music variously attributed as originating from cafferigna, Portuguese country dancing and local drumming.
The work awaits its orchestral world premier.
