(29 Jun 2017) A Spanish ship carrying about one thousand migrants rescued in the sea off the Libyan coast arrived at the Italian port of Salerno.
They were amongst thousands who arrived in Italy on Thursday after being rescued in the Mediterranean.
According to Frontex, more than 10,000 migrants have been rescued in the Mediterranean over the last three days, which it claims is the largest number of people rescued within such a brief span so far this year.
European Union's foreign minister Federica Mogherini said the bloc supports Italy's stance that it can no longer handle the thousands of migrants alone, and she insists other EU countries must share the burden.
