This workshop follows on from the keynote discussion of the Emma B. Andrews Diary Project internship program and will discuss strategies for working with digital tools and building digital collections in the DH classroom. Use cases will include in person and online classes at the University of Washington, built on the Canvas CMS. We’ll look at a couple of the syllabi and discuss the ‘flow’ of the class while considering how to provide a structure that usefully incorporates both traditional learning opportunities and practical hands-on activities. We’ll consider some of the platforms used for project building including Omeka and StorymapJS and consider how best to present technical or ‘how to’ information to support student learning. Finally we’ll discuss how to plan scaffolded assignments and assess work in a format designed to encourage student engagement and positive learning outcomes.
