Dental implants have become a common modality of treatment nowadays. It is no longer a rare treatment or an exclusive treatment and these have been proven to be long lasting with the little post-operative care for long-term maintenance and to keep it lifetime with you. Now when we have gone to the extent of you know investing in a dental implant coming, getting the surgical procedure done what to do immediately to take care of it and what to do to keep it for a lifetime? Soon after dental implants are placed while at the clinic itself the dentist should be placing a gauze or cotton for you to just bite on and just hold it in that same place for about 30 to 45 minutes. After that once you are taking it out see that you do not spit out and whatever is there you can just swallow it in. Do not have anything to rinse for at least these 24 hours and even if you are having mild water or anything see that you can rinse gently and swallow it back in. So once after you are taking this gauze piece out, take your medicines that have been prescribed which commonly include your antibiotics, your painkillers, a tablet to reduce your swelling as well as multivitamins or antacids as required. And once you reach home place ice packs for 5 minutes on and off for the first one hour. There is no use doing it at a later stage. Do it immediately post surgical that kind of contains your swelling and your post-operative pain. Do we need to be worried about pain? Mostly not and do we need to bear with it? Definitely not. So if you feel that there is pain once you go back home take the medicines or get in touch with your dentist for any injections or pain management procedures. This is for your immediate post-operative care. Now once you sleep and wake up in the morning do not panic if you see few drops of blood on your pillow it is quite common. A little oozing of blood post procedure is fine. If it continues beyond 24 hours again get back in touch with the dentist. What we can eat is something that you can easily swallow like whether it's your curd rice, khichdi, pancakes or soft pasta. Anything that you can easily swallow in and have lots of cool liquids. They should be non-carbonated and non-alcoholic and for the first one week post surgery at least avoid smoking, having alcoholic drinks and going out in the sun too much or even strenuous exercises like swimming is best avoided. Don't spit or do not often touch the site and once you finish your medication probably just come in for a visit with the dentist. If any sutures need to be taken out you can get it taken out and then the crown placement is usually done immediately or post three months of the surgical procedure. Now once the crown is placed definitely treat it like your natural teeth. So we all brush our teeth twice daily continue doing the same and add in a protocol of using what we call as a water flosser which is easily available and regular use of mouth rinse. I think doing these two and taking a little extra care to reach the depths of your implant and the depths of the gum as well as constantly massaging your gums should see that the implants stay lifelong. For those patients that have medical conditions see that you visit the dentist at least once in four months wherever you are to just see that the things are fine and do one annual checkup to check that all your health parameters are maintained fine. So medical conditions are no longer a contraindication for implants, just see that you visit once in four months and maintain those implants they'll definitely improve your quality of life.
