On March 18, 2021 WTTW hosted a Screening and Community Conversation of Coded Bias, an Indie Lens Pop-Up film. Sylvia Ewing, who can be seen on WTTW and around the country, as an on-air television host for PBS fundraising specials moderated the online conversation with community and thought leaders. Sylvia was joined by Ruha Benjamin, Ph.D. (Princeton University Professor, African American Studies and Director, Ida B. Wells JUST Data Lab), Leah Castleberry (Founder & Chief Strategist, LYC Strategies, LLC), Dr. Fallon Wilson (Lead Principal Investigator and Co-Founder, #BlackTechFutures Research Institute) and Carl Hertz (Director, Information Technology at Elevate). The panel discussed the underlying biases in AI technology that shapes our lives and threatens our democracy as well as practical steps that can be taken to address these biases.
