Do you remember in the movie Braveheart when Mel Gibson’s character famously said, “they may take our lives, but they'll never take our [chocolate]!” OK…well don’t fret because no one is directly taking away your chocolate, but rising commodity costs for cocoa might force you to second guess your purchasing decisions. In the last year, the price of cocoa is up more than 35%…and supply could be constrained even further with hotter and drier weather affecting West Africa. To make things worse, another principal ingredient of chocolate…sugar prices have been hovering around an 11-year high. Again, the root cause of this stark increase is related to weather. Which reminds of me of something I said two years ago…most CPG brands are highly exposed to the physical effects of climate change long-term...they just don't realize it yet.
