Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro clinched a third term in office, receiving 51% of the vote. The announcement came just after midnight on Monday, with 80% of ballot boxes counted.
Despite this official result, multiple exit polls had predicted an opposition victory. The electoral authority reported that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez garnered 44% of the vote. The opposition, however, had previously claimed 'reasons to celebrate' and urged supporters to keep monitoring the vote counts.
