STORYLINE:
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Saturday attended the farewell ceremony for the late Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, in Moscow.
Orban, who often has been critical of Western sanctions against Russia, placed a wreath by the coffin and talked to Gorbachev's family.
Gorbachev will be buried at the Novodevichy cemetery next to his wife, Raisa, following the ceremony at the Pillar Hall of the House of the Unions.
The iconic mansion near the Kremlin has served as the venue for state funerals since Soviet times.
But Gorbachev is set to be buried in a relatively low-key ceremony, which will not be attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin on Thursday privately laid flowers at Gorbachev's coffin at a Moscow hospital where he died two days earlier.
The Kremlin said the president's busy schedule would prevent him from attending the funeral.
The late Soviet leader launched drastic reforms that helped end the Cold War and precipitated the breakup of the Soviet Union,
The Kremlin's refusal to declare a state funeral reflects its uneasiness about his legacy.
Gorbachev has been venerated worldwide for bringing down the Iron Curtain but is reviled by many at home for the Soviet collapse and the ensuing economic meltdown.
