Just a short drive from Agios Nikolaos is the pretty Crete village of Kritsa and the nearby archaeological site, the ancient Doric city-state of Lato.

If you are looking at an interesting day trip from Agios Nikolaos, the drive to Kritsa takes only about 15 minutes.

On the way, it is first worth stopping at Panagia Kera. This is a Cretan Byzantine church which you can find just before Kritsa. It is known for the Byzantine frescoes which are meant to be the best on Crete.

Kritsa is a pretty Cretian village and is one of the oldest and most picturesque villages on the island. The top part of the village is a web of narrow lanes which is especially atmospheric. 

Very close to Kritsa is the archaeological site of Lato, it was one of the strongest Dorian city-states of ancient Crete. Most of the ruins date from the 5th and 4th centuries BC.
