India's southern state of Kerala is currently facing a serious health crisis as cases of the Nipah virus have emerged. In response, the Malappuram district has imposed strict restrictions, including mandatory face masks and the closure of schools and colleges. Public gatherings are also limited.
So, what exactly is the Nipah virus?
First identified in 1999, Nipah is a highly infectious zoonotic disease affecting animals and humans, with no vaccine or treatment available.
The World Health Organization (WHO) considers it a priority disease due to its outbreak potential.
Alarmingly, the case fatality rate for Nipah ranges from 40% to 75%, making it significantly more deadly than many diseases we’ve faced, including COVID-19.
