Packing for a canoe trip to the BWCA or elsewhere is different than for a backpacking trip. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that you want to pack in a way that keeps everything waterproof. That way, in case of capsizing, your packs will float and everything in there will stay dry.
There’s more to it than just stuffing everything in the bag and hoping it fits!
And it’s easier than you think!
Ashley Bredemus breaks down the simple steps to follow to get all your gear into a pack in a way that is organized and waterproof!
1. The first thing you need to do is put all your gear away. Stuff all your clothes, sleeping bags and other equipment into ditty bags or compression sacks. This will give you “blocks” or “capsules” that are easy to organize and pack.
2. Before you start packing make sure your portage pack is waterproof. If you are using a barrel or a waterproof backpack, this won’t be a problem. But for most canoe packs, you’ll need to use two plastic liner bags and a nylon one as well.
Now, fitting the liner bags into the pack can be a bit clumsy. To help in this, add some weight in the bottom of a bag — a few rocks or a heavier stuff sack of gear will do. Then fold the top flaps out and down.
Now you’re ready to pack.
3. It’s easiest to put big items in first and then squeeze in small items, to fill in all the empty space. It’s a bit of a puzzle to get it just right, but with some practice, you’ll be a pro.
4. Keep things you might need during the day at the top of your pack. Items like rain gear and bug nets should be packed on top so that when the bugs or the rain comes, you won’t need to spend 15 minutes packing and repacking your pack just to stay dry.
5. Finally, seal the bag. Do this by rolling down each liner bag and tucking the corners down.
When done right, your bag will float!
