Maryland U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin will not seek re-election next year, his office told 11 News Monday morning. "I think it's best making decisions when I am in control of making decisions. That's why I decided this is the right time, and allow someone else serve in the U.S. Senate," Cardin said. Before succeeding Sen. Paul Sarbanes in 2006, the 79-year-old Democrat represented the 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House for 20 years. During that tenure, he served as Senior Democratic Whip and was a member of key committees, including Ways and Means.
