The two main problems with wind turbines: they are imposing, intrusive structures and they don’t work in a light breeze.
So what if a turbine could look like a tree and work in light winds?
Fortunately, the solution may be found in New World Wind. An artificial tree called the Wind Tree can collect and transform wind energy.
It takes a lot of time, effort, and space to set up conventional wind turbines. The technique is efficient and produces clean energy, but the large buildings are impractical to construct in the centre of a city, much alone a person's backyard.
These artificial trees are designed with three steel trunks and other smaller branches that house miniature wind turbines in the shape of leaves. A small gust of wind propels the leaves into motion and – voilà – the Wind Tree begins providing an environmentally friendly form of energy.
New World Wind designed the first micro-turbine, the Aeroleaf, with city living in mind. The Aeroleaf can harvest wind energy from any direction because to its cone form, and it only needs a wind speed of 2.5 metres per second to begin doing so.
You'd think something like this would be buzzing and humming all the time, but that's not the case. The New World Wind-designed Aeroleaf doesn't need a belt or a gear to turn, so it's a quiet generator that can be used anywhere.
The Modular Tree and the Bush are two further wind energy harvesting items offered by New World Wind. The Aeroleaf technology is the same in both products, however the garden-friendly version is more compact.
The Wind Tree may be bought in a variety of configurations and for a starting price of 49,990€ (about US$50,830) on New World Wind's website. The price of a Modular Tree may be anywhere from $28,800 ($29,350) to $47,500 ($48,400), while a Bush would set you back €21,500 ($21,900). Wind energy collection technology isn't cheap, but a Wind Tree should more than cover its costs over time.
