This video was recorded by Noah Sullivan in the U.S. state of Massachusetts, where he, Jacques, and Yvette live. Chiac is spoken by an unknown number of people, primarily in the Canadian province of New Brunswick, and by smaller communities through the North American region of New England. A variety of Acadian French, Chiac has its roots in the varieties of French spoken throughout North America, with significant vocabulary from English in vocabulary and phrase-forms, as well as loanwords from Canadian First Nations languages, especially Mi'kmaq. Though Chiac has traditionally been an informal vernacular language, Chiac speakers have developed a lively media culture in recent decades, with native-language music, television, and literature.
