Well, we did it. After talking about doing it for several years and doing more research about the process of doing prescribed fire legally in Ohio, we finally lit a match and dropped it. The hard woods timber on our father's property has accumulated a very dense layer of leaf litter under the canopy, effectively choking out all the under growth that is such good habitat for small game like rabbits and turkeys. Mainly turkey nesting and poults. Our goal was to burn off the leaf litter and open up that fertile soil to sunlight so that the seed banks of deposited native grasses, shrubs, and other plants can germinate and grow. We also know it's just good forestry practice to reduce the amount of potential fuel for forest fires, and we wanted to do our part. From clearing fire breaks to running our new drip torch, you can catch the full process here. Feel free to leave us a comment and let us know what you thought of our work and/or if you have any questions!
