An amazing ride on the restarted service post second wave covid lockdown. This part covers the 27 km section from Mettupalayam (MTP) to Coonoor (ONR) station, the midway and the major town enroute Ooty (UAM). The ride upto ONR is powered by the X-class steam locomotives. This is the only route wherein steam locomotives are regularly used! Although the darjeeling railway also uses steam locos, it's mostly for joy rides for short distances. The steam locomotives give NMR a distinct charm, taking scores of passengers to Coonoor and Udhagamandalam, crossing 45.8 kilometres (28 mi), 108 curves, 16 tunnels and 250 bridges.
