Half of U.S. States Allow Concealed Carry Without a License
The current state of "Gun Society America" is that gun control laws at the federal level are weak, despite the increasing number of gun crimes.
As if to confirm this, at the beginning of the new year, on January 1, the state of Alabama enacted a law allowing the carrying of guns without a license.
Alabama became the 26th state to allow concealed carry without a license. This means that more than half of the 50 states now make it legal to carry a gun without a license.
Guns with guns? Number of States Approving Unlicensed Concealed Carry Surges
Alabama, which passed a law allowing unlicensed concealed carry last year, enacted it at the start of the new year on January 1.
While gun crime continues to escalate in the U.S., gun control laws at the state and federal level have weakened over the past two decades, according to the report.
Perhaps as a result, more and more states are allowing people to carry guns without a license (permit), as if to "take poison with poison" or "take guns with guns.
In 2010, only two states allowed concealed carry without a permit.
But in the 13 years since, nearly 24 states have passed similar laws. Eleven of those states have passed laws in the last three years.
While the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida seemed to spark state gun control efforts, overall gun control has eased considerably over the past two decades.
States with more lax gun control have higher homicide rates.
According to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization that tracks gun violence, there were more than 600 shootings in the U.S. in 2022, the second-highest annual total on record.
It also found that there have been more shootings in the past five years than in any five-year period since 1966.
A recent study by the Center for American Progress, a public policy think tank, also found that states with looser gun laws have higher murder rates.
While pro-gun-carry groups hail the law as a "victory for the people," opponents fear it will lead to increased crime and casualties.
Alabama has one of the highest gun death rates in the country.
In March 2020, when Corona's lockdown began, gun sales in the United States were at an all-time high.
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, more than 2.3 million guns were sold that March, and nearly half of first-time gun buyers were women.
In addition, many people of color also tended to own guns for the first time.
Records show that there were 4,522 gun deaths that year. That's a new record and a 14 percent increase from 2019, and more than a third of those were reportedly gun homicides.
Law enforcement officials are concerned that these numbers will increase if guns become available for unlicensed carry.
In fact, Alabama already has one of the highest gun death rates in the nation.
Pros and cons of allowing concealed carry without a license
Sheriff Derrick Cunningham of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office stated that
Some people think they can go anywhere they want with a gun now, like in the Wild West, but they are wrong. There are still certain restrictions on people carrying guns.
People who own guns need to make sure they are knowledgeable about guns. We fear that more and more people will think that they can do whatever they want with their guns.
If that continues, the situation will only get worse.
On the other hand, Eddie Fulmer and other supporters of Bama Carry, a gun rights advocacy group, claim that this is a victory for ordinary citizens. They say anti-gun rights groups predicting doom and gloom are simply overreacting.
Fulmer, a former firefighter, explained this theory in a media interview.
If we have guns, we will all die. This law encourages everyone to carry a gun. That is not what is being said.
I believe that if more people carry guns, more citizens will obey the law.
We simply want to exercise our right to self-defense for ourselves, our families and those around us.
Assemblyman Shane Stringer, the bill's sponsor, also said.
The enforcement of this law will go a long way toward ensuring that the average law-abiding citizen does not have to go through the hassle of obtaining a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
We will not allow guns to fall into the wrong hands. It makes no difference who can or cannot have a gun. Those who are currently prohibited from owning guns should remain prohibited.
