This week's video features Turtle Bay Airfield, also known as Kirby Shussuer airfield. It's located north up the East Coast Highway and is an easy drive from Luganville. It was the first of all the fields to be built on Santo and was cut out of the jungle in just 20 days. It enabled the US to land, refuel and arm B-17 bombers that took Guadalcanal from the advancing Japanese army. You can visit the site of the airfield and while much of it is grown over, you can still make out patches of bitumen among the trees.
