The Twelve Tables were the foundation of Roman law for centuries. Even later rulers such as Justinian used the Twelve Tables as a basis for their own legal codes. We even see the Tables serve as inspiration for some modern legal systems with both United State's law codes and traditional English Common Law being heavily influenced by the Twelve Tables. The Tables served not only as a compendium of legal remedies but also as a reminder of the rights, privileges, and duties that each Roman citizen held, Patrician or Plebeian. The Tables are without a doubt the most important writings from the Republican Era and are perhaps the most important Roman writings period. But what did each table say? How fair were the Tables? And how does each Table rank in our viewing of history? Let's talk about it.
This is the second in a two part series around the Twelve Tables and the 2nd Plebeian Secession. This video covers the tables themselves while the first episode talked about the background for the creation of the Tables.
