This is a short patient information video showing DMEK endothelial cell transplant surgery for Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy. The surgery can be performed at the same time as cataract surgery if required.
The main advantages of DMEK over other types of corneal transplant for Fuch's dystrophy is a very low rejection rate (less than 1%) and much faster vision improvement. No stitches are used for the transplanted cells and this aids visual recovery without causing stitch-related astigmatism.
